OneWeb as a Phoenix ... OneWeb has reborn. The UK government associated with an Indian Company to invest in the European based LEO Satellite Constellation, put in bankruptcy last month. The Covid crisis gave a new dynamic to WFH (Work From Home) and this new way of working could be an amazing opportunity for all these Satellite companies providing High Bandwidth Internet Access everywhere, and specially where Fiber & Mobile networks are not present. Another opportunity to rethink the Territories politics to distribute business out of huge cities.

RobinHood has lost his values. In the fourteenth century, Robin Hood was stealing the rich to give to the poor. Today, the famous trading platform supposed to bring the financial trading market to the young generation against the Wall Street Wolves lost its way. Two days ago, Robin Hood advised its young clients to buy FAANG stocks ( Facebook, Amazon, apple, Netflix, Google ) and so 15000 young traders bought ... fangDD stocks (a small chinese company) increasing the fangDD value by more than 400% for the joy of their founders. The world of tomorrow without AI ? Surprising decision from IBM a few days ago : They decided to stop their Facial Recognition business based on AI to ‘combat systemic racism’. How stopping AI research will stop racism ? Were the IBM AI products not safe enough to avoid mistakes ? Were they too complex or complicated to be correctly used ? We could expect another decision : accelerate R&D to improve AI algorithms and provide safer products and services ... Will we stop medecine research each time a surgeon makes a mistake ? Will we stop drones R&D each time a human uses a drone for bad purposes ? Perhaps we reach the limits of too quick communication ... Let’s wait the ‘world of tomorrow’ ...

Green as the new Innovation driver ? The Covid Crisis brought some major companies to ask for public & state help & fundings. Airlines, travels, automotive, manufacturing have to review their growth strategy. As you have heard these past weeks, investors are asking these sectors to accelerate their move to green faster than anticipated. Airlines will have to become greener, therefore asking aircraft manufacturers to deliver greener engines. Cars will have to decrease their carbon footprint, boosting the R&D around electric vehicles. Same approach for green or decarbonated energies. But the biggest influence will come from consumers, or not ...

Microsoft goes fluid ... Over the last weeks, many companies had to face any operational issues, putting innovation as a non core business. On the Digital world, not only the GAFAM succeeded to improve their revenue and margin, but also to accelerate Innovation ! Microsoft is a good illustration. After a great reshape of Teams to bridge the gap with Zoom, the Redmond leader announced a brand new Office platform during their Build Conference : Microsoft Fluid. The classical docs, tables, graphs are becoming live lego blocks, collaborative modules to be shared between any kind of traditional documents. They can be edited in real time by anyone in any app. Collaborative, Cloud, Open-Source, Microsoft is reinforcing its strategy...

Home Office as the new standard ? 2 major Digital companies have communicated home office will become the standard ‘forever’ ! Are Google & Twitter anticipating a new trend ? Not sure ... In 2013, Melissa Meyer (Yahoo CEO) had decided to ban remote office to increase productivity. As usual, human life is not fully digital. Moving from ‘No Home Office’ to ‘Full Home Office’ is definitively a mistake. All companies used to Home Office know truth in the mix, Part Home Office. We have now all the digital tools, infrastructure & platforms to work remotely (home or travel) with a very high level of productivity, decreasing by the way the Carbon Footprint and increasing Well Being. But closing the office will bring other issues, starting with a growing distance between employees & companies, decreasing the sense of belonging and power of brand, even more in latin cultures. The only question is what is the best mix ? Few days a week or few days a month ? This depends on jobs, sectors, companies & personal experience of course. Sure we will see a new job appearing in coming months : the CHO ! You knew the Chief Happiness Officer, Welcome to the Chief Home Officer !

Light-footprint is following the hype of Carbon-footprint. Over past months, many voices pointed out the light pollution brought by Starlinks satellites constellation. The hundreds of LEO satellites were causing damage to sky observation and SpaceX decided to modify their design to reduce drasticly the light- footprint for next launchs. The growing interest in sustainability is now having a huge influence on business, even the most complex ones, pushing firms to be very agile, being able to modify their engineering in real time. On earth, many new businesses are emerging, to promote reuse, to ban planned obsolesence, Back Market being a nice example.

Automation & AI as the limit of sustainable innovation ? The Covid crisis have seen the prices of some basics products (pasta, toilet paper, ...) reaching the sky. Many prices are calculated by automatic algorithms for many online platforms, based on demand, as initiated by the Airlines industry decades ago. During a lockdown period, we could find these approachs a bit weird ... So do we need to regulate dynamic pricing to avoid these behaviors ? The first answer would be to correctly use automation & AI, with human sense & values. Automation & AI are delivering what we want them to deliver, the way we want to offer services. No worth blaming technology if we don’t know how to use them ... As the great Rabelais said : ‘science without conscience is but the ruin of the soul’

Covid killed OneWeb ... Early this month, SoftBank decided to stop investments on the OneWeb Project, aiming at providing satellite high bandwidth internet worldwide. The current Covid crisis was the main argument to move OneWeb Bankrupt ... Even if dozen of satellites have already been launched, out of the 700 forecasted to provide full earth coverage. So, what next ? 3 decades after Irridium failure, same story happens again. Billions used for which results ? Do we need multiple satellite constellations knowing the level of investment & risks ? Of course, these systems are not compatible, with the risk of having 70 new satellites flying for nothing for years . Innovation, Speed & Scale ... A crisis can always be seen as an opportunity. 2020 will definitively remain as a special year, the year of massives changes in personal & professional sides. Some companies have to stop or reduce their business while others are boosting their activities like Netflix, Sony or Zoom. Nevertheless, sizes matters. For the big corporates, scale is not an issue, as Netflix who perfectly managed this crisis as a great opportunity. But for a startup , Unicorn or even a Decacorn, scaling can be an issue. While jumping from 10 to 200 Millions users within a couple of months, Zoom could not manage some security basics. But which company could be able to multiply by 20 its business without any issue ? Ransom of glory, these massive numbers attract also all hackers who want to break the new king. Interesting to see people blaming and banning Zoom while having used their solution for free, for years , without being able to understand or explain clearly which are the exact risks ... We are now living in a very ephemeral world, where people forget very quickly, where people forgot that 2 years ago Facebook was involved in a massive affair, the Cambridge Analytica, where personal data were shared and sold out of any rules. But not a single company banned Facebook at this time, all kept their Corporate Facebook Account to promote their brands, even if the facts were obvious ... The monopoly power. Two sizes, two interests, two policies... No doubt Zoom will learn from this crisis, they will bridge the security gaps as their UX, telecom & video algorithms are clearly world class. But each company needs time to scale, be patient.

A world definitively ... global. Aside from the dramatic human consequences and casualties, the Coronavirus Covint 19 is showing once again the difficulty to manage a hyper connected world where millions of people and products can travel the planet within a few hours or days and affect any country and business far from the ‘patient 0’. Traceability will become a number one priority in logistics, supply chain, transportation, whatever the technology, blockchain or others. The latest news coming from South Korea & Iran affected all financial markets with the GAFAM loosing for example more than 230 Billions, even if speaking about economy could appear insane in front of this major human crisis. This will probably bring new questions around manufacturing dependency when we know most of industrial products are manufactured in Asia. Butterfly effect in a global connected world ...

Sustainable space on top of a sustainable planet ? A few hours ago, One Web successfully launched 34 new LEO satellites (Low Earth Orbit, below 2000 Km). Around 650 satellites will be launched within 2 years to provide a worldwide satellite Internet coverage. SpaceX Starlink aims at deploying ... 42.000 satellites for the same goal. Amazon is planning the same project named Kuiper. Knowing we have today 4000 satellites flying over our heads (and 300.000 debris ...), do we really need to have so much competition and so many flying objects when we deploy 4G, 5G or FTTH (Optical Fiber) in most of countries ? We should at least encourage the ‘lean constellations’ to minimize the number of satellites. Not sure the future generations will enjoy the magic pleasure of watching the milky way during summer nights with all this light pollution already caused by the 240 starlink satellites a couple of months ago.

Protect your home devices ! A few days ago was revealed a new massive cyber attack: half a billion of devices hacked with bots ! AI, IOT, bots & Cybersec : the new explosive cocktail to hack routers, servers and IOT devices. This attack was possible as too many of us are still using defaut passwords or easy passwords. A simple program with a bit of AI can easily break these passwords. Doing so, the hacker can then access and control all your devices connected to your ‘smart unsafe home’, shutters, webcams, heating, assistants, pcs & servers with all your data ... So IOT can be nice devices, unless you don’t protect them, you don’t protect yourself.

Are Electric scooter fleets a sustainability failure ? A few days ago, Lime announced an operating loss above $300 million, showing they are losing money as quickly as they raise it from VCs ... An other competitor, Bird, is on the same trend ... One of the main reasons being the very short lifespan of their vehicles: 45 days ! 45 days being also the delay for each scooting before delivering revenue, unlucky business model ... Lime did not anticipate the lack of ‘respect’ for their nice electrical tools: pedestrians fed up to find scooters on their way, other ones throwing them into rivers or sea, for ‘fun’, generating massive Lithium pollution into the water, many scooters being stolen or damaged, we are far from the sustainable positive valuable model ☹ Let’s hope the massification and maturity of this new market will help the few survivors to build a new real sustainable model.

WeWork, Uber and many others are showing the limits of massive investments without clear results or objective economic logic. Over last years, the main KPI to evaluate the success of a StartUp/ScaleUp was the level of ... fund raising. Even worse, a startup showing profits without Venture Capital investment is still considered as a failure, a lack of ambition. As the ones rating the startups are most of the time the same funding these startups, we could question the model: is it fair? Can we trust this rating? We could therefore think about another way of qualifying the startups, as a regular business, based on revenue and margin ... But this is perhaps too much disruptive 😲

Twitter has lost its voice …

For the first time ever, the number of Monthly Active Users on Tweeter has been decreasing last quarter, from 336 to 335 Millions … Bad year for Social Networks after Summer Facebook news … Interesting to see the rapid evolution of Social Networks usage. What is the future of Tweeter ? Can we still share valuable information with so few characters ? At the same time, LinkedIn is growing up, transforming a simple giga CV DataBank into a new Professional Network more and more used to share & communicate. With more than 260 Millions Monthly Active Users, should not take long to beat Tweeter …

Who needs a 8K screen ?

Samsung and LG both unveiled new 8K TVs at the IFA 2018 expo in Germany. Great news ! Really ? Interesting to see that almost no video content (TV or Video broadcasts) is available right now for the public as the 4K TVs are quite recent in the stores. Another interesting point to look at is the energy consumption. As you could imagine, the power needed by these brand new devices is not really aligned with sustainability aspects at global level ... Some could argue that the coming 5G networks will be able to bring these high quality content soon. Yes, with the same energy paradigm. Do we need always to watch 8K content, every time & from every device everywhere ? Not convinced that CNN ‘breaking news’ deserves it ... a poor 2K screen would make the deal ... And you will discover below that a few days ago, Amazon joined Apple in the very closed club of the ... Trillion Dollar valued companies ... Enjoy you 0,5 K reading😊 Patrice

5G: The Telecom of the future

5G will definitely be the network of the future. Many experimentations have been made by Telecom providers and vendors. By providing bandwidth above 1Gb, decreasing latency by 10, we can wonder what is the need of deploying optical fiber everywhere. Even if the 5G standard is not yet finalized ( 5G NSA and 5G new Radio), many telecom actors have started the race. The First commercial networks will be deployed in coming 2 years. Welcome to the Phygital World !

Digital is everywhere. But don’t think that Digital will replace Physical. Digital needs Physical as Augmented reality needs our ‘real’ reality... More and more digital innovations in our industries are coming from massive amount of datas we can collect on the physical world through sensors & connected objects. To better analyse our past and present to anticipate or improve our present or future. After Microsoft promoting Azure Sphere for IOT world last week, Google is announcing this week Edge TPU, to provide Artificial Intelligence capabilities within connected products, without using real time cloud resources. Cloud to the Edge, a sustainable architecture, pushing intelligence & processing power at the edge of clouds, embeded within micro chips... Patrice
